MASTER OF SCIENCE DEGREE - STEP BY STEP PROCEDURE

By the end of the first semester:

1. The student chooses a "Graduate Faculty Advisor" - Major Professor who must be a member of the Graduate Faculty - and selects a major area of study. The Faculty Advisor is the "Supervisor" if the student chooses the thesis option. CE and ME students should complete the check-out sheets which they may obtain from their Graduate Coordinators.

2. If the student has taken graduate courses in another institution then he should complete the "REQUEST FOR GRADUATE TRANSFER CREDIT FORM" and submit to his advisor.

One semester before graduation:

The student completes the "APPLICATION FOR THE CANDIDACY, MASTER'S DEGREE" form which he obtains from the College of Engineering Office and submits to his advisor. The faculty advisor is the chairman of the committee for he oral exam (or the thesis defense). All the committee members should be a member of the Graduate Faculty. See the deadline for submitting the form in the Graduate Catalog.

The advisor checks the course requirements, transferred courses, etc. and forwards the form to the college office.

The form is typed by the College Office and circulated for signatures before it is sent to the Graduate School for Approval.

During the semester of graduation:

1. The student pays the graduation fee during registration.

2. The student completes the "REQUEST FOR MASTER'S EXAMINATION" form in consultation with his advisor and other committee members and then submits the form to the college office.

This form is typed and circulated by the College Office for signatures and then sent to the Graduate School. See the deadline for submitting this form in the Graduate Catalog. Also see the catalog for the last date for holding an oral exam or thesis defense.

3. If the student is in the thesis option of the program then he submits his thesis to his supervisor and the committee members at least one week before the defense.

4. The student prepares a written notice and announces his exam (or defense) publicly a week before the exam.

5. The College Office types five original copies of the "EXAMINATION AND THESIS REPORT" form and gives it to his advisor before the exam.

6. The chairman and the committee members sign the forms if the student satisfactorily defends his thesis or passes the oral exam. Signed forms are submitted to the College Office after the exam.
