Master of Science in Engineering
Home > Graduate > MS in Engineering
Applicants with various backgrounds and different goals can be accommodated in the program of graduate study leading to the degree of Master of Science in Engineering, and many of the courses are scheduled "after hours" to enable the working engineer to continue to broaden his/her education on a part-time basis.
After admission, students will be required to:
- Select an area of concentration (civil, electrical, mechanical, or naval architecture and marine engineering).
- Select between two options:
- Thesis (Research) Option - 30 hours of graduate work, including six hours of thesis research
- Non-Thesis (Courses Only) Option, requiring 33 hours of graduate credit
NOTE: Teaching or Research Assistants should contact their respective departments for any additional requirements. With the approval of the College of Engineering and the Graduate School, a student may select an employment-related topic for his/her thesis.
Admission
Applicants should have received a Bachelor's degree in a field of engineering from an ABET accredited engineering program or in the case of foreign students, must present evidence of an equivalent preparation. Applicants with a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics or the sciences, as well as those with other undergraduate degrees, will be considered on a case-by-case basis subject to the conditions outlined below.
Grade Point Requirements
Applicants for admission to the Graduate School in a master's degree program in engineering are expected to have a grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 for undergraduate work and for all graduate and post-bachelor work. (The point system is as follows: A-4, B-3, C-2, D-1, F-O, WF is considered an F.) Applicants who have an undergraduate GPA between 2.5 and 3.0 may be considered for probationary admission on a case-by-case basis which will include a review of their last 60 hours of engineering course work and GRE scores. Students who are admitted on probation must complete 9 hours of graduate level engineering course work with an average of B or better in order to be removed from probation.
Graduate Record Exam
Students applying for admission to the UNO Graduate Program in Engineering will have to submit the scores for the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) prior to being allowed to register for graduate courses in a degree program. Applicants should check with the Graduate Coordinator in their major for minimum percentile scores (quantitative and analytical) required for admission.
Applicants Without an Undergraduate Degree in Engineering
Students holding a Bachelor's degree without an undergraduate degree in engineering must:
- Take the required non-engineering courses (see links in item #2 below) or demonstrate that they have taken equivalent courses, and,
- Complete a core foundation of general engineering studies by taking one set of the appropriate courses listed below and any prerequisites to these courses or by passing equivalent credit examinations. The core foundation courses must be completed with a grade of B or better. Follow the link below for the appropriate courses for your area of concentration:
* None of the above listed courses are available for graduate credit. Furthermore, all students must complete all requirements for the graduate courses in which they wish to enroll, and must meet any additional requirements as stipulated by the Graduate School or the College of Engineering.
Graduation Requirements
Master's degree graduate students in engineering must complete one of the following:
- Option 1 - 30 hours of graduate work, including at least 15 hours of 6000 level courses and six hours of thesis research credit.
- Option 2 - 33 hours of graduate work, including at least 18 hours of 6000 level courses.
Students are required to take at least 18 semester hours in engineering subjects (excluding Thesis Research) for Option 1, and 24 semester hours for Option 2. The remaining hours may be selected from engineering, mathematics, physics, business administration, biological or earth sciences or other specific graduate fields approved by the student's graduate advisor and the College of Engineering. These courses must be at the 4000 level or above. All students are required to pass a comprehensive examination before a committee of graduate faculty members selected and appointed by the Dean of the College of Engineering in consultation with the graduate student and his/her faculty advisor. Graduate students may also have to fulfill certain departmental requirements. For example, MS students in Electrical Engineering must all take ENEE 6001.
The graduate student's advisor provides counseling on graduate courses, transfer credits, thesis requirements, research topics and elective subjects and serves as the chairman of the committee to conduct the final examination of the candidate for the graduate degree.
